How Do Pets Affect Surfside Beach, TX Indoor Air Quality?

Your pet is a loving companion that would never do anything to hurt you. However, your furry friend can hurt the quality of air in your Surfside Beach, TX home. Here are four ways pets can affect indoor air quality.

1. Pet Smells

Something as simple as a dirty litter box or the smell of wet fur can affect indoor air quality. Pet owners often use candles, sprays or other deodorizing products to mask these smells. But some products that make your home smell fresh contain chemicals that pollute the air.

2. Shedding

Keeping your home free of pet fur or hair is often a challenge. It’s helpful, though, because pet fur and hair can collect allergens like pollen and dust. When your pet sheds, particles in the fur or hair (as well as the fur itself) can get into your air.

Maintaining a clean air filter can help fight this problem. Check the filter every month, and replace it when it gets too dirty. This will generally be every two to three months or so.

3. Pet Dander and Other Particles

Dander consists of flakes of skin that animals shed. If you have asthma or allergies, particles in the pet dander can trigger your ailments.

Dander isn’t the same as fur or hair. Dander is lightweight, like dust, and can linger in the air. It can also stick to household items like walls, floors and furniture.

4. Tracking Pollutants Inside

Time outside is good for most pets, but they can bring outdoor pollutants inside. Paws and fur are great for picking up pesticides, dirt, mold and other irritants. When your pet brings these pollutants into the home, the air quality goes down.

Pet grooming, vacuuming and washing pet bedding can help keep your air clean. You can also contact Davis Air Conditioning & Heating, Inc. to learn about our indoor air quality services.
