3 Ways to Prevent the Heater from Breaking Down When You Need It Most

When the winter temperatures start to fall in the Houston area, you need to know that your heater will keep you nice and warm. Follow these three tips to prevent your heater from breaking down when you need it most.

Program the Thermostat

When the Houston area begins to turn from hot summer to balmy fall to cool winter, it’s time to update the settings on your thermostat. Make the switch from cooling to heating, and confirm that the heating element is working properly. Next, reprogram the thermostat for cool winter temperatures, making sure to decrease the temperature while the family is away during the day or asleep overnight.

For even finer control over your home’s HVAC system, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. All models allow you to log in and adjust the settings via Wi-Fi, and many models feature energy reports, so you can confirm that the heater is working as it should.

Clean the Floor Vents

Cleaning the vents throughout your home is a dusty yet necessary chore that’s best done before winter sets in. Keep in mind that when your floor vents accumulate dirt and debris over the course of several months, or are blocked by furniture, your heater may be forced to work harder to keep you warm, which can lead to a breakdown. To avoid any maintenance issues, simply remove the vent covers, dust the area with a microfiber cloth, and vacuum lightly if necessary.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

No matter if it’s brand new or nearly a decade old, your heating system will have the best chance at a long life if it receives regular maintenance. The best way to do this is to schedule an HVAC tuneup with Davis AC, which includes complete inspections of your heating and cooling systems. Schedule the heating checkup before the fall temperatures drop too low to make sure your furnace or heat pump runs smoothly when you need it.
