4 Ways to Get Rid of Dust

Because humans are a major source of dust, thanks to dead skin cells and the dust mites that love to snack on them, this is a problem everyone faces. Getting rid of dust in your Galveston, Texas, home takes effort, but simple steps help reduce this problem.

Vacuum Textiles Often

Your textiles carry lots of dust within them because the fabric is such an inviting place for it to cling. Get a HEPA vacuum and do a thorough cleaning of your furniture, carpeting, and curtains every week. Take area rugs outside and shake them out before vacuuming.

Upgrade Your HVAC Filters

Not all HVAC filters are equal. Upgrade to a filter with a high MERV rating. These filters are thicker and designed to trap smaller particulates. If your HVAC system can handle it, get a HEPA filter, which is made specifically for removing allergens and tiny particulates from the air. These filters keep dust from cycling through your home. Most home HVAC systems won’t accommodate HEPA filters so be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations for your system.

Try Air Purifiers

Air purifiers come with a variety of settings, strengths, and filters. Get one rated specifically for ridding your home of dust. Place it in your bedroom or living room or wherever you feel your allergy flaring up most. Between cleanings, an air purifier assists your routine by keeping the air fresh.

Wash Your Bedding Weekly

Because skin is a major source, it collects in bedding and mattresses easily. Then you breathe it in while you sleep. Invest in quality mattress and pillow covers. Strip them and your sheets off your bed every week, and wash everything in hot water to kill any dust mites and remove all the dust from the bedding. Do your blankets and comforters, too.
