Improve Indoor Air Quality and Reduce Allergens With HVAC Maintenance

Springtime in Houston can be miserable for those who have seasonal allergies, but you can make your home a haven from allergens with a little cooling system TLC. Your home’s air contains a large number of particles that can trigger allergy attacks, including pollen, pet dander, mold spores and dust mites. This spring, make it a priority to improve indoor air quality and reduce allergens by scheduling annual HVAC maintenance with a qualified technician.

How HVAC Maintenance Reduces Allergens

Over the course of a cooling season, dust builds up inside the air conditioner or heat pump and recirculates throughout your home. Coils become coated with scale and grime, impacting the system’s ability to keep your home cool and reduce humidity. Restricted airflow due to obstructions in ducts and wear and tear on your system prevents the air filter from cleaning your air as effectively as it should.

Your technician will thoroughly clean the cooling system, inspect the coils, check for obstructions and measure the airflow, as well as perform a number of other tasks that will ensure top cooling efficiency and help prevent breakdowns for the duration of the long, hot cooling season.

DIY Maintenance

To improve indoor air quality and reduce allergens, DIY HVAC maintenance is just as essential as a professional tuneup. The most important task you can do is to check the air filter every month and replace it when it’s clogged with dust.

A dirty filter won’t effectively trap dust and allergens that circulate through your home and will worsen allergy symptoms. It also allows dust to enter the system and restricts airflow, reducing comfort and increasing energy bills. Choose a filter with a minimum efficiency reporting value, or MERV, rating between 9 and 12 to trap more of the smallest allergens, including mold spores, pollen and dust mite debris.
