Those Tax Breaks for Energy-Efficient Heating and Cooling Systems: The Clock Is Ticking

A legislative package extending tax credits for residents installing eligible energy-efficient improvements to their home was approved by Congress on January 31, 2012. The tax credit allows homeowners to claim credits for qualifying purchases for 2012 through December 31, 2013. The clock is ticking for homeowners who want to take advantage of these tax incentives.

Among the products that homeowners can get tax credit for in the HVAC category are the following:

  • Advanced main air circulating fans: This component propels heated air from the furnace through the ducts. Qualifying fans must account for no more than 2 percent of the furnace’s energy consumption.
  • Air-source heat pumps: Qualifying heat pumps are eligible for a $300 credit. To qualify, split systems must carry a minimum Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF) of 8.5, an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 12.5, and a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 15. Package systems require a minimum 8 HSPF, 12 EER, and 14 SEER.
  • Central air conditioners: Qualifying central A/C units are eligible for a $300 tax credit. Split systems must carry a SEER of 16 and an EER of 13 to qualify, while package systems need a minimum 14 SEER and 12 EER.
  • Propane, Natural gas or oil furnaces: A tax credit of $150 is available for furnaces. The minimum requirement for eligibility is a 95 percent AFUE.
